Brad Bellinger, Chairman of the Australian Beef Association, explains the anomalies inherent in the importation of beef from countries affected by BSE and CJD and the imperfections of the national livestock identification system.
He shows how the NLIS does not do the job it was designed to accomplish, in fact it really is counter-productive. It does not help to open export doors and can cause harm to cattle producers.
He also shows that Australian beef producers receive 36% less for their cattle than the equivalent producers in the United States. Australian consumers are also paying almost double for similar cuts of meat than their American counterparts. It seems that the Australian retailers, especially the big two, are reaping the benefits while consumers and producers get the short end of the stick.
Filmed before an appreciative audience in Casino, NSW this is a very informative DVD and leaves no doubt about the plight of the cattle industry.
